이 사건은 1960년 10월, 유족들이 미국정부에 손해배상을 청구하였으나, 증거 불충분 및 시효만료 등의 이유로 기각되는 등, 수차례에 걸친 진정과 손해배상 청구가 진행되던 중 1999년 AP통신의 보도를 통해 본격적으로 재조명을 받기 시작하여 정부적 차원의 진상조사를 실시, 2001년 1월 12일, 한·미 공동발표문 및 성명서를 통해 미국정부는 미군에 의한 양민학살사건이라는 실체를 인정하고, 민간인 희생에 대한 깊은 유감을 표명하였다. 노근리 쌍굴다리는 전체길이 24.5m, 높이 12.25m의 철근콘크리트조 교량으로 내부높이는 10.35m이고, 폭은 6.75m, 두께는 1.9m이다. 1999년에 실시한 액체방수공사로 인해 다리내부의 일부 탄흔을 볼 수 없게 되었으나, 쌍굴다리 후면에는 보호망을 설치하여 당시의 모습을 보존하고 있다.
노근리 쌍굴다리는 학살 당시 탄흔과 파편 등으로 당시의 현장감을 생생히 느낄 수 있는 역사체험의 장으로서 미군에 의한 양민학살이라는 한국전쟁의 또 다른 아픈 상처를 그대로 보여주는 우리의 소중한 마이너스 유산으로 그 가치를 인정받아 2003년 6월 30일, 등록문화재 제59호로 등록·관리되고 있다. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * 우정디자인기획에서 발간한 [한국의 근대문화유산 Vol.1] 에서 발췌한 내용 입니다. |
